Solar Water Heating

Solar water heating systems work well in Ontario, if they are properly designed and installed. The economics are marginal, even with subsidies, due to the low cost of natural gas at this time (February 2010). However there are good CSA approved solar hot water packages now available for residential applications that will last along time if properly maintained.

Solar water heating systems are designed to use the thermal energy of the sun to heat the water used in the home for baths, showers, laundry, etc.. Solar water heating is one of the oldest applications of solar energy it was commonly used in Florida and California in the late 1800's. It is now very common in other parts of the world. Japan, Israel, Greece, Australia, Germany, China all have & produce large numbers of solar water heating systems!

Solar water heating products designed for the Canadian climate, have to be tough and long-lasting. Some imported products are not up to our weather!

We have both "seasonal use" hot water packages and "year-round use" packages. In many cases a seasonal package will deliver 60-70% of what a year-round package will deliver, for significantly less cost.

Solar water heating systems are almost always used as preheaters for conventional gas/electric/oil/etc. water heaters. This is because there will be days with no sunshine - and most people want/need a continuous supply of hot water. Solar alone cannot guarantee that, so a backup heater is required.
