Off-Grid Solar Electric Systems

Off-grid solar PV systems range tremendously in power, sophistication and size. From the simpliest systems that pump water for a fountain only when the sun shines to large systems that become their own micro-grid and power multiple properties. Their common distinction is that they are not connected to a utility power grid and so must store power for overnight and dark days, or have some other form of backup, ie: a generator or cease to provide electricity until the sun rises.

Below is an illustration of some of the steps in the size of off-grid PV systems.

Larger off-grid PV systems use more sophisticated and capable inverters, battery charge controllers and banks of batteries. The illustration below shows a couple of possible configurations.
