Is there really much heat to be recovered from my drains?

Q:

Is there really much heat to be recovered from my drains?

A:

Yes! It is estimated that as much as 85% of the heat in the hot water consumed in a home goes down the drain. The balance is lost to the air inside the home. The primary factor in determining how mauch can be recovered by using an in-line waste heat recovery device, is whether or not hot water is being drained immediately after being drawn from the tap.

For example, shower water is drained as soon as it is drawn. Bath water is not. Washing your hands or rinsing dishes under running water allows for the waste heat to be recovered with an in-line heat recovery device, but washing your hands or dishes in a sink full of water does not.
