September 27, 2016 - Ontario Government Cancels Part of the FIT Plan

New Rates Released Sept 21st - Program cancelled Sept 27th!!

The Ontario Government announced on Tuesday September 27th, 2016 that it was cancelling the future "Large Renewable Energy Procurement" component of the FIT Program. Link to article here: https://news.ontario.ca/mei/en/2016/09/ontario-suspends-large-renewable-energy-procurement.html

The new pay-out rates for 2017 for this component of the FIT renewable energy plan were just released on September 21st by the IESO. This illustrates how the decision to scrap the next phase of the FIT procurement was a purely political play (as was the whole FIT program to begin with).

At this point in time, some other components of the FIT plan are still active - specifically the MicroFIT plan which is available to homeowners for small grid-tied solar electric systems 10 kilowatts in size and under. The MicroFIT program is due to expire December 31, 2017 (in just over a year). (This could change at any time if politicians feel it too should be sacrificed for political gain.)

This announcement does does make one wonder how this is all supposed to fit with Ontario’s “Green Plan” that was announced in June of this year and how this will square with the Federal Government’s green plans - that have yet to be announced….
