Space heating with solar energy faces the fundamental challenge that when buildings require the most heat, there is the least amount of solar energy available to be collected. In Canada in the summertime when there is a great deal of solar energy available, buildings typically need to be cooled, not heated.

However, solar make-up air pre-heating can be a viable application for solar space heating in the Winter. This application can be suitable for large commercial facilities such as warehouses, factories, gymnasiums and other buildings that have large air make up requirements and large South facing mural walls.

Solar Ontario is available to work with engineers, architects and others to specify solar make up air pre-heating systems in commercial buildings, and to examine retrofit opportunities.
